A driver narrowly escaped injury earlier this spring when a metal guide wire post was launched into the air by a separate DUI crash on I-295, the Pennsylvania State Police said in a statement issued Tuesday.

The near-miss happened on April 1 at 11:38 a.m. in the westbound lanes of I-295 in Middletown Township.
A blue Mazda CX-5 veered off the left side of the roadway and into the grass median. It ended up striking a guide wire, state police said.
The force of the crash ripped a guide wire post out of the ground and sent it flying into the highway, state police said.

A driver in a white BMW X5 was unable to avoid the flying debris.
The airborne post slammed into the hood of the BMW and crashed through the front windshield. It landed inside the cabin of the vehicle, missing the driver, state police said.

No life-threatening injuries were noted in the state police press release.
Troopers determined the driver of the Mazda was operating the vehicle under the influence. The driver of the Mazda faces charges of DUI.
