For years, Dr. Johanna L. Murray DVM, VJM ’00  has been the voice for those who cannot speak. As a dedicated veterinarian, she has spent her career diagnosing the silent pain of animals and providing a path to recovery. But today, the woman who has dedicated her life to saving others finds herself in a quiet, urgent battle for her own survival.

A Life Turned Upside Down

Until 2016, Johanna lived a life defined by health and high energy. That changed with a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes—a condition she knew ran in her family, but one whose hidden dangers were never fully explained to her. While she managed the condition, the diabetes was silently ravaging her kidneys.

The true breaking point came in December 2022. What began as a manageable health journey turned into a life-altering crisis. Now, instead of spending all her day in the clinic, Johanna spends three days every week tethered to a dialysis machine.

The Heavy Toll of Dialysis

Dialysis is a medical marvel that keeps Johanna alive, but it comes at a staggering cost. The procedure is physically exhausting, and there are few days that Johanna does not experience nausea and vomiting. As a consequence she is unable to work the full-time hours her passion demands.

“The longer I’m on dialysis, the worse things will get,” Johanna shares. It is a race against time, yet her spirit remains remarkably resilient. In preparation for a transplant, she has already shown incredible discipline, losing 60 pounds and maintaining a strict health regimen.

A Support System of Two-Legged and Four-Legged Friends

Johanna isn’t walking this path alone. Her family has been a constant pillar of strength, but she also credits a different kind of therapy for her perseverance: the unconditional love of her three dogs, Mushu, Taz, and Panda.

For Johanna, a successful transplant isn’t just about personal health; it’s about returning to her calling. The gift of life from a living donor would mean the end of the machines and the beginning of a renewed life—one where she can once again advocate for the animals who depend on her.

How You Can Help

The “ask” is not small, but it is safe and life-saving. A living kidney donation is a profound gift that would allow Johanna to reclaim her life, her energy, and her career.
