Firefighters from Bristol, Bristol Consolidated, and Goodwill Hose fire companies were dispatched to the 600 block of Swain Street at 2:31 p.m. to assist police and PECO personnel in gaining access to a home.

Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack said PECO was already on the scene with positive gas readings when fire crews arrived.

Using gas meters, firefighters began monitoring adjacent properties, the chief said.

The detection of gas prompted the evacuation of 12 homes in the area.

Residents were relocated to the fire station on Mifflin Street while PECO crews excavated the street to reach and repair the leak, Slack said.

Even after the leak was secured, Slack noted that fire companies and utility workers continued to detect positive readings caused by gas trapped in the ground.

Fire crews were released from the scene at 5:30 p.m.

While PECO personnel remained on-site to continue monitoring the area into the evening, all but one household was permitted to return home, Slack said.
