The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors approved a contract Monday to install a new pedestrian safety device at the intersection of Langhorne-Yardley Road and Maple Point Drive.

The supervisors authorized a $133,651 contract with Armour and Sons Electric for the purchase and installation of the pedestrian signal. The contract includes an additional $3,000 for maintenance and protection of traffic, which was missing from the initial proposal, according to Assistant Township Manager Nick Valla.
The project for a rectangular rapid flashing beacon is funded by a $146,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s Multimodal Transportation Fund program.
Valla, who presented the proposal at the meeting, said the device is commonly known as an illuminated crosswalk with a pedestrian push button system. He noted that a similar beacon is located in front of Middletown Community Park.

The beacon will be activated when a pedestrian presses a button, creating bright flashes to alert drivers of people crossing the street.
The pavement work for the project, including curb ramps and pavement markings, was previously authorized in May as part of the township’s road improvement program, officials said.

Supervisor Dana Kane asked why the intersection was not included in other recent pedestrian improvements in the area.
Valla explained that while PennDOT is installing a similar beacon at Briggs Road, the limits of that project do not extend to this intersection.
“I, for one, am personally really pleased to see this project moving along,” Supervisors Chairperson Mike Ksiazek said. “This is something that I know residents in that area have been asking for for a long time.”
