The incident was initially dispatched as an alarm system activation at the Zion Lutheran Church on Jefferson Avenue.

Responding crews from Bristol Borough fire companies gained access to the church and discovered a smoke condition, which led to the call being upgraded to a building fire, according to Deputy Fire Chief AJ DeAngelis.

Additional firefighters responded and crews look for the cause of the smoke that filled the church.

Firefighters found a burned-out light fixture in a first-floor closet as the source of the smoke, DeAngelis said.

Crews confirmed there was no fire extension beyond the light fixture, and the call was scaled back to only Bristol Borough fire companies, DeAngelis said.
