As construction continues on a new roundabout aimed at improving traffic flow and safety, PennDOT will implement weekday lane closures on Langhorne-Yardley Road starting this week.

The restriction will be in place Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting Thursday and is expected to continue through Friday, June 13. A lane closure with flagging will be used on Langhorne-Yardley Road between Bridgetown Pike and Briggs Road in Middletown Township.

Motorists are urged to give extra time when traveling through the area, as backups and delays are anticipated due to the construction.

The lane closure is necessary for ongoing roadway and utility work as part of a $10.6 million PennDOT project.

The overall project looks to reduce traffic congestion and enhance safety on Langhorne-Yardley Road at its intersections with Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road.

PennDOT’s contractor, James D. Morrissey Inc., is constructing a single-lane roundabout, realigning the roadway, installing upgraded traffic signals, implementing stormwater management, adding ADA-compliant curb ramps, improving signage and lighting, performing resurfacing, and enhancing mobility for pedestrians and bicyclists.

A key part of the project is the replacement of the existing signalized T-intersection at Langhorne-Yardley Road and Bridgetown Pike with a single-lane roundabout.

PennDOT officials said the roundabout design is intended to decrease vehicular speeds while improving overall safety and traffic flow.

A detour will be put in place for motorists once construction of the roundabout itself begins.

Improvements are also being made at the Langhorne-Yardley Road and Woodbourne Road intersection, including realigning the northern leg of Woodbourne Road and constructing auxiliary turn lanes on all four approaches. The eastern leg of Woodbourne Road will also be widened to accommodate a left turn lane on Langhorne-Yardley Road approaching Erica Drive, according to PennDOT.

Enhancements for pedestrians and bicyclists are included in the project, including the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at existing crossings on Langhorne-Yardley Road near the Briggs Road intersection and on Woodbourne Road at the Core Creek Park and Maple Point Middle School crossings. The project also features five-foot-wide paved shoulders, new paved paths along Bridgetown Pike and Woodbourne Road connecting to Core Creek Park driveways, pedestrian accommodations at the new roundabout and signalized intersection, and sidewalks constructed along the southern side of Langhorne-Yardley Road between Woodbourne Road and Briggs Road.
