Falls Township residents will soon see changes to their trash and recycling collection as Waste Management moves to automated trucks by late spring.

Bob Jones, a Waste Management manager, told the Falls Township Board of Supervisors Monday evening that the switch is necessary due to staffing challenges, reduced spillage, and worker safety concerns.
Waste Management provides collection at no cost to residents because of its landfills located in the township.
Residents will continue to have twice-weekly collection, but some will see their collection days change, Jones said.

Letters detailing the new schedules and information about new carts will be mailed to residents in the coming weeks.
The township will transition to 96-gallon wheeled trash and recycling carts designed for automated collection systems.

Jones said residents can request smaller carts or a second cart if needed.
The new carts, which are already used in neighboring Bristol and Middletown townships, should be “more than adequate” for residents, Jones said.
Waste Management is looking to deliver the new carts in late May and early June, with the automated collection system fully operational by late June.

Jones said hand collection will still be required on some smaller streets, which are currently being identified by Waste Management crews.
The company has been planning the transition to automated trucks for several years, citing increasing difficulty in staffing manual collection trucks and injuries faced by hand-collected trash crews.

Jones said current employees will have the opportunity to operate the new compressed natural gas trucks.
Waste Management will continue to collect yard waste and bulk items in the township.

“We want to do a couple of presentations in the community before this starts so people see these carts and how these work,” Jones said.
The new trucks and collection system will allow for more efficient logistics for Waste Management, he said.
