Construction on the long-planned replacement of the Brownsville Road bridge, which connects Lower Southampton and Middletown townships, will begin Monday, March 31.

Brownsville Road will be closed between Creek Road and Periwinkle Avenue starting March 31 and continuing through fall 2026, according to PennDOT.
During the closure of the span, which is named the U.S. Army Private First Class George Raymond Huntzinger bridge, drivers will be directed to use Brownsville Road, Bristol Road, Bridgetown Pike/West Maple Avenue (Route 213), and Old Lincoln Highway.
Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.

PennDOT officials are asking drivers to allow extra time when traveling near the work area because backups and delays are expected.
Loftus Construction Inc. was awarded the $12,112,112 contract to reconstruct the bridge, which crosses the Neshaminy Creek.

PennDOT will replace the existing 68-year-old concrete box beam bridge as part of the project.
The new structure will measure 278 feet long and 41.375 feet wide. It will be approximately 24 feet longer and 9.875 feet wider than the existing bridge.
In addition, the vertical alignment will be raised over Neshaminy Creek to provide an adequate waterway opening and to slightly improve the existing sight distance on both approaches to the bridge.

The new structure’s design allows for one less pier than the existing structure to improve the flow under the bridge, PennDOT said.
The new bridge will have larger shoulders to improve the intersection sight distance, improved stormwater management, a resurfaced approach roadway, and adding a partially grouted riprap for scour protection at the piers and abutments.

The Brownsville Road Bridge is currently listed in fair condition, according to PennDOT data.
The replacement comes after the new West Maple Avenue bridge opened in 2015.
