Falls Township’s animal control officer discovered the cats Friday and requested assistance from the Bucks County SPCA, officials said in a statement.

Chief Humane Police Officer Nikki Thompson activated the organization’s emergency response and medical teams.

The cats and kittens were found in cramped dirty cages and carriers, with many visibly sick and some seriously ill, the Bucks County SPCA said.

The organization found that some were crammed into a crate or carrier with as many as six cats.

Medical staff examined each animal upon arrival at the nonprofit’s shelter.

Thompson negotiated the surrender of all 53 cats from the owner, the Bucks County SPCA said.

The Bucks County SPCA called the incident a “sad case of animal hoarding and neglect.”

“These cases are troubling and sad because of the level of suffering endured by animals who are unable to escape their circumstances. What can start with good intentions – someone attempting to care for unwanted cats or other animals – can go terribly wrong and fast. We ask the community to please be on alert for animals who are being neglected or mistreated,” the Bucks County SPCA said in a statement.

The cats are now housed at the Bucks County SPCA’s Lahaska and Quakertown shelters.

The Bucks County SPCA said it is thankful the cats are safe and beginning their recovery.
