The standalone drive-thru location at the busy Falls Township intersection of West Trenton Avenue and Pine Grove Road, which is next to an existing Wawa store and a former Rite Aid, closed its doors this week.

Crews were spotted closing up the location on Monday.

Opened in January 2021, the drive-thru was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic as a new concept for the convenience store giant.

The modern-looking building featured a limited menu focused on quick food and drink options.

“Wawa is constantly testing new concepts to meet the needs of our customers,” Jennifer Wolf, a Wawa spokesperson, told LevittownNow.com.

While the Falls Township has closed, Wawa still operates two other standalone drive-thru locations in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and Largo, Florida. Those locations are stay open as the company continues to “test and learn,” Wolf said.

At the launch of the standalone drive-thru, Wawa CEO Chris Gheysens said he believed the company could surpass Pennsylvania-based rival Sheetz in the drive-thru arena.

Mendy Meriwether, head of Wawa’s to-go initiatives, stated at the time that customer feedback and data were key in deciding the offerings at the new location.

Some Wawa locations have added drive-thru windows to a traditional store, including some in the Levittown area.

Despite the closure, Wawa is not slowing down its expansion.

Wawa recently entered Central Pennsylvania, a region already familiar with Sheetz and Rutter’s, and opened its first store there as part of broader growth plans. Wawa intends to open 160 new stores in Georgia, Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana over the next five to eight years, according to the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Currently, Wawa operates 1,070 stores across eight states and Washington D.C.

Wawa’s origins trace back to 1803 when it started as an iron foundry in New Jersey. By the late 1800s, owner George Wood developed an interest in dairy farming, leading to the establishment of a small processing plant in Wawa, Delaware County, in 1902. The venture proved to be a success. Facing a decline in home milk delivery in the early 1960s, George’s grandson, Grahame Wood, opened the first Wawa Food Market in 1964 in Pennsylvania as a retail outlet for their dairy products. Since then, the company has significantly expanded and is now among the largest privately-held companies in the nation.
