Officials said it was caused by a high-pressure gas leak across the river in Burlington, New Jersey.
The loud noise, which echoed across parts of the local area, was accompanied in some parts of the area by the distinct smell of natural gas.
One reader noted they could detect the smell of natural gas in the Croydon section of Bristol Township.

Croydon Fire Company Chief Tom Tryon issued a statement to reassure residents and inform them of the cause of the disturbance.
“Due to a high-pressure gas leak along the river in NJ you may smell natural gas and hear a loud noise like a jet engine in the Croydon area,” Chief Tryon said.

Residents reported that both the noise and smell had ended by late Thursday night.
