Two projects in the Levittown area have been selected to receive funding through the PECO Green Region Open Space Program.

PECO announced last week that Bristol Borough and Middletown Township are among the 22 regional grantees for the 2023-2024 cycle. Each will receive $10,000 to support specific environmental projects.
In Bristol Borough, the funds will be used for the Spurline Trail Resurfacing project. The initiative aims to restore a significant section of the borough’s 3-mile multi-purpose asphalt trail. The trail provides vital links to numerous community hubs, including the Snyder-Girotti Elementary School, the Grundy Mill Complex, and the Bristol Borough School District Athletic Fields, as well as waterfront and residential areas.
Middletown Township will allocate its grant towards the Middletown Community Park Barn Solar Energy Project. The project focuses on installing a rooftop solar system to reduce electricity costs at the community park barn—a venue that hosts a variety of recreational programs, art classes, and social events throughout the year. The project is part of the township’s broader goal to offset 100 percent of its municipal buildings’ energy needs with solar power.

Since its inception in 2004, the PECO Green Region Open Space Program has distributed over $3 million to more than 400 projects.
The program, in collaboration with Natural Lands, has supported diverse projects, including the Sustainable Wissahickon Trails Initiative and the recent Park in a Truck initiative by Thomas Jefferson University.

To commemorate the program’s 20th anniversary, PECO also plans to launch a bonus round of grants totaling $50,000. The special funding will support environmental projects that align with PECO’s Path to Clean initiatives, aimed at fostering a cleaner energy future.
