Bristol Borough Council intends to submit a grant application to state and federal agencies in hopes of securing $1.5 million to expand boat docks along the Delaware River.

The council on Monday voted to apply for the funding through the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and the U.S. Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service.

Council President Ralph DiGuiseppe mentioned the benefits of the expansion during the council meeting.

“We’re trying to improve that waterfront with more docks. We’re hoping to get that $1.5 million,” said DiGuiseppe.

He noted that an existing pier is in place, and the additional funds would allow for new docks to be constructed on the left side of the current docks.

The proposed expansion would allow the waterfront to accommodate increased boat traffic, said officials.

The search for new funding follows the successful opening of two 250-foot docks in 2017. They were funded largely by state and federal grants.

The docks currently support about 20 boats and are regularly used.

The presence of the docks has been cited as having a positive impact on local businesses, with boaters frequently visiting restaurants, bars, and other shops in the nearby Mill Street area.
