
A chain diner has closed its only location in the area after four and a half decades.

Dennyโs on Old Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township closed sometime last week without prior warning.
A sign on the door thanked guests for their patronage, and directed them to the Dennyโs on Industrial Highway in Essington, Delaware County, which is a few miles from Philadelphia International Airport.ย

The restaurant, which was known for its American-style breakfast menu, was one of the oldest chain restaurants in the area.

Property records show that Dennyโs corporate first acquired the property in 1977, and then sold it to the current franchiser Mid-Atlantic Diners LLC in February, 2020.ย
In past years, the diner was open 24 hours a day, but recently the location began limiting its hours.

The location in Essington continues to operate 24 hours a day.
Recent reviews on Yelp showed customers complaining of long wait times, poor food and a lack of employees.
Dennyโs did not respond to a request for comment about why the location was closed.

During an earnings call in February, Dennyโs CFO Robert Verostek revealed that the company had closed 57 locations in 2023, with more closures expected this year. Verostek blamed soaring operating costs as a reason for the closures, but also said the company expects to open 30 new restaurants this year.
