Mellus, whose tenure with the department began on December 2, 1985, was celebrated for his service to the municipality.
A graduate of the Pennsylvania State Police Academy, Mellus initially joined the ranks as a patrol officer before quickly moving into the role of a K-9 handler. Alongside his four-legged partner, Snowball, Mellus served the township in that role for eight years, the department said.

In 1995, Mellus was promoted to sergeant, a position in which he excelled in both patrol and administrative capacities. He played a pivotal role in several community policing initiatives, such as the Citizens Police Academy, the Neshaminy School District Adopt a Cop program, and various crime prevention seminars.
In 2011, Mellus was promoted to lieutenant. In that role, he was instrumental in modernizing the department’s IT infrastructure, overseeing the implementation of critical technologies such as in-car cameras, a comprehensive records management system, and training management tools, police said.
