George School, the boarding and day high school in Middletown Township, has announced the end of its football program.

The decision marks the end of a century in the school’s sports history.
The school administration, after a year-long review and with the backing of the George School Board, has cited concerns about the sustainability of the program. Key issues highlighted include the size of the roster, the increasingly competitive high school football landscape, and the implications these factors have on player safety, according to a statement from the school.
According to the school, running a competitive and safe football team took resources that could disrupt the “equitable distribution of resources across all our programs, from arts to athletics and above all academics.”

“This decision was reached with great difficulty and with great care. It is no reflection on this yearโs players and coaches, or any members of the program who have shown passion and dedication to the sport over the years,” the statement said.
Despite the end of the football program, George School officials reassured the community of the school’s commitment to athletics.

Former Head Football Coach MacAdoo Harrison-Dixon, in a heartfelt letter to the football families, expressed regret and took responsibility for the program’s shortcomings.
“This decision was not reached lightly, and it is not a reflection of the dedication, hard work, and passion that each member of the team has demonstrated throughout the years. As relayed to me, the reasons behind this decision encompass a range of factors, including financial considerations, resource allocation, and broader strategic planning for the schoolโs overall well-being,” Harrison-Dixon said.
He added: “My staff and I want to express our gratitude for the commitment and effort you have poured into the program. The memories created, friendships forged, and skills developed on the field are invaluable, and we recognize the significance of this chapter coming to a close.”
