Keystone Elementary School in the Croydon section of Bristol Township has been awarded a $68,832 grant from the federal Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program to help encourage healthy eating habits among students.

The grant will be used to provide students with fresh fruits and vegetables separately from the lunch or breakfast meal in one or more areas of the school during the school day.

โ€œThrough the Fresh Food and Vegetable Program, Keystone students have the opportunity to expand the variety of fresh produce they eat,” said Brandon Lang, the district’s food service director. “The program promotes healthy snacking at an early age, and increases childrenโ€™s fruit and vegetable consumption. Keystone students enjoyed the program last school year and we are excited to continue it to provide further opportunities.โ€

โ€œMr. Lang is always on the lookout for programs to add to our Food Services Department that will positively impact our students,” said Superintendent Michael Nitti.

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program is a USDA program that provides funding to schools to help them offer fresh fruits and vegetables to students. The program is designed to help students make healthy choices and improve their overall diet, officials said.

โ€œIt is important to start kids eating healthy at an early age,โ€ said State Rep. Tina Davis, a Democrat from Croydon. โ€œThis grant helps Keystone Elementary School do just that.โ€
