Police Apprehend Suspect In Falls Twp. Catalytic Converter Theft Following Pursuit

A police pursuit resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old man from Philadelphia following a reported catalytic converter theft in Falls Township.

The incident unfolded at approximately 4:23 a.m. Wednesday when a license plate reader flagged a stolen registration at Big Oak and Oxford Valley roads in Lower Makefield Township.

The vehicle fled onto I-295 with officers in pursuit, according to authorities.

The chase came to an end a short time later when the fleeing vehicle crashed into a median along I-295 and two male suspects then fled the scene on foot, police said.

Following a search of the area, officers were able to apprehend one of the suspects, the 23-year-old man from Philadelphia. The man was taken into custody without further incident, police said.

The second suspect was not located.

When searching the abandoned vehicle, officers discovered an assortment of tools, including saws, and a haul of seven to eight stolen catalytic converters, police said.

The two men were suspected of being involved in a catalytic converter theft in Falls Township, police said.

The 23-year-old man was arrested, but he has not yet been arraigned on charges related to the case. Court records stated he will face charges of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property, and fleeing and eluding.

The theft of catalytic converters has become an increasingly prevalent across the region due to the valuable metals they contain. These components from a vehicle’s exhaust system are often targeted by thieves for their lucrative scrap value.
