Route 1 Project To Cause Traffic Impacts In Bensalem, Middletown

PennDOT has announced that ramp and roadway work are scheduled to cause traffic impacts along Route 1 in Bensalem and Middletown Townships.

According to PennDOT, starting from 8 p.m. on Friday to 6 a.m. on Monday, the ramp from northbound Route 1 to Rockhill Drive at the Neshaminy Exit will be closed for reconstruction.

Due to the closure, drivers will be detoured north on Route 1 to the Penndel Exit, then left at the turnaround to southbound Old Lincoln Highway, followed by a southbound journey on Route 1 to Rockhill Drive at the Neshaminy Exit.

Starting from 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 20 to 6 a.m. the following morning, a single lane pattern is scheduled on Route 1 in both directions between Old Lincoln Highway and the Neshaminy Exit for a traffic shift.

The traffic shift will move both directions of Route 1 traffic onto the southbound side of the new bridge over the Neshaminy Creek, which was constructed last year.

Following the traffic shift, the contractor will begin demolishing the northbound side of the bridge for reconstruction, according to PennDOT.

Drivers have been asked to allow extra time when traveling through or near the work areas.

The construction work is subject to changes due to weather conditions.

PennDOT encourages motorists to exercise caution when driving through work zones and to obey posted speed limits. Additionally, PennDOT reminds motorists that fines are doubled for violations occurring in work zones.

PennDOT is in the middle of a large project to reconstruct, widen, and improve a three-mile section of Route 1 in Bensalem and Middletown townships.

The Route 1 project is on Phase 2. The second phase will widen the highway.

The $95 million Phase 1 of the project in Bensalem Township is mostly completed.

The $111.5 million Phase 2 of the project is being carried out by Chester County-based contractor JD Eckman Inc. The work is expected to be done in mid-2026.
