A construction worker had to be rescued and was injured after falling from a Route 1 bridge Thursday morning.

Around 3:45 a.m., police, fire crews, and medics were dispatched to the Route 1 construction zone near the Neshaminy Creek in Bensalem Township for a rescue.
Rob Sponheimer, the battalion chef of Bensalem Township Fire Rescue and the fire marshal, said the construction worker fell about 40 feet off the bridge between southbound Route 1 and northbound Route 1.
The construction worker, according to photos, appeared to be in a somewhat confined area below the bridge.

Firefighters from Bensalem and Middletown townships got to the area where the worker fell and secured him. They then used ropes and the Penndel Fire Company’s ladder truck to remove him from the location, Sponheimer said.
The fire official said it took about 40 minutes for rescue to be completed.

Bensalem EMS transported the injured construction worker to a local hospital for treatment.
Route 1 southbound was closed for about an hour due to the incident.
In addition to Bensalem Township Fire Rescue and the Penndel Fire Company, the Parkland, Nottingham, and Trevose fire companies were on the scene.

PennDOT is currently working to revamp Route 1 from Bensalem Township through Middletown Township.
