The fragrant aroma of fresh-baked twists of dough is truly enticing and most people would agree that there is something seriously special about these interlocking loops.

Pretzels with their doughy knots have always been one of Americaโ€™s favorite on-the-go snacks.

No matter how you roll it, knead it, or knot it, few amongst us can resist a pretzel.

Pretzels from the business.

Papaโ€™s Pretzel Place has the recipe for success for fresh pretzels with an artisan twist!

Itโ€™s a wholesale and retail soft pretzel bakery right at 302 Mill Street that opened in 2021.

Legend has it that, at some time during the Middle Ages, Catholic Monks were trying to figure out what to do with little bits of dough they had that were leftover after baking their loaves of bread. They didnโ€™t want to be wasteful. According to The History of Science and Technology, in 610 AD, an Italian monk invented pretzels as a reward to children who learned their prayers. He called the strips of baked dough, folded to resemble arms crossing the chest, pretiola [little rewards].

It has also long been rumored that pretzels arrived with the Pilgrims on the Mayflower and were used as a trading tactic with the American Indians.

While the origins of the pretzel may be debated, our love for them certainly is not.

Papaโ€™s Pretzel Place was opened by Northeast Philadelphia native Michael Beck in July 2021.

Michael had enjoyed science as a Frankford High School student and he opted to continue his education at LaSalle University majoring in biology. He worked in sales for a film distribution company through college and then took on a position as director of sales for 20th Century Fox, one of the preeminent producers of films, stars, and filmmakers, in Chicago.

โ€œChicago was very cold and there were no soft pretzels there,” he said.

He read about German bakers and gives a nod to their old time recipes.

After returning from Chicago, he promoted Fox throughout the Northeast and then started working with teenagers in sales in the early 1990โ€™s, assisting them with esteem issues and helping them to build self-confidence in order to feel, act, and be successful, essentially improving how they thought.

โ€œ’How To Win Friends and Influence People’ by Dale Carnegie was a powerful book for me,” Michael said.

He visited the Scouts Council and began fundraising for the Scouts in 2002, working with the scouts teaching them how to sell $10,000 worth of popcorn in one weekend.

Recently, he traveled to Louisville to speak โ€œon helping kids to raise their self confidence and self esteem as well as teach them public speaking skills through the Scouts fundraising programโ€.

Before opening Papaโ€™s Pretzel Place with his son in Bristol Borough, Michael continued his sales career, renting space in Huntingdon Valley for his IMAJICO Inc where his creations were both life-sized creatures and hobby kits based on action figures.

โ€œWe made the first Terminator figure,” he proudly said.

Michaelโ€™s entrepreneurial career spirit ideas kept TWISTING towards pretzels.

He had always enjoyed making them and everyone LOVED eating them.

The father-son duo is SALTY about mediocrity. Michaelโ€™s son, Cody, is a trained chef, having graduated from the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College with degrees in Culinary Arts.

They decided Mill Street was a good fit in which to rise up, and they redid the entire building.
