Troopers said the period of enhanced enforcement on area roads began early Friday morning and continues until 11:59 p.m. on Christmas Day. The enforcement will ramp up again on Friday, December 30 and continue into the late night of New Years Day.

“This safety initiative P.A.D.E.E.P (Pennsylvania Aggressive Driving Enforcement Education Program) targets drivers who aggressively operate their motor vehicle in a manner which is dangerous to members of the public, which include speeding, seat belt violations and child seat belt infractions,” a statement from state police said.

Troopers will also be watching out for texting while driving, prohibited use of hearing impairment devices, careless driving, and reckless driving.

Additional drug recognition experts will be out on the roads looking for those operating their vehicles while intoxicated, troopers said.

During the Christmastime enforcement period last year, state police Troop M, which patrols Bucks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties, investigated 37 crashes and made 17 DUI arrests. A week later during the New Year’s enforcement period, they handled 32 wrecks and 25 DUI arrests.
