Frederick Root, 79, of Norristown, was killed from the injuries he sustained the single-vehicle crash that occurred just past 6:30 p.m. Bucks County Coroner Meredith Buck said Root’s death was ruled accidental and he died of multiple injuries.

The crash happened along southbound Route 1 under the West Interchange bridge that connects West Gilliam Avenue and West Highland Avenue on the Langhorne Manor Borough and Middletown Township border.

A passenger in the vehicle was injured and rushed to St. Mary Medical Center as a trauma patient.

Firefighters and emergency medical crews were called for a report of a one-vehicle crash with entrapment. They arrived to find a violent crash scene, Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company Chief Frank Farry said.

Root was removed from the vehicle by good Samaritans, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Root’s vehicle appeared to have crossed the median between the access road and the highway, struck a bridge support, and then ended up along the access road, throwing debris in all directions.

The crash closed Route 1 southbound for several hours Sunday evening.
