October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and St. Mary Medical Center will host a free virtual seminar about breast health from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, followed by a live Q&A.

The seminar will be led by Dr. Russell Reisner, a board-certified surgeon and breast surgical oncologist St. Mary.
Reisner’s expertise includes skin and nipple-sparing mastectomy, advanced oncoplastic techniques, and optimization of cosmetic enhancements following mastectomy.

Topics that Reisner will stress include:
- The importance of attendees to be aware of their breast health
- How to be a partner in evaluating breast health, and
- Resources available for maintaining good breast health.
While breast cancer continues to take a toll on women – the American Cancer Society anticipates nearly 300,000 cases of invasive breast cancer being diagnosed this year – education and seminars such as Reisner’s could reduce that number.

“Technology is very good at getting the word out. I think many more women are aware of the need for breast cancer screening,” Reisner said
In addition, advances in genetic testing for genealogy research had led many more women to inquire whether their family history warrants testing, he added.
“Testing has identified gene mutations that allow us to act in a preemptive manner,” Reisner said.

Reisner received his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine. He completed a general surgical residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, and a surgical oncology fellowship at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo, N.Y.
