On Friday, October14, the last Throw Back Canteen will be held at FDR, which is set to close in the coming months. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. former students from back in the day will be giving school tours and pointing out some of the history of the building that has educated tens of thousands of Bristol Township kids since its opening in the 1950s. There will also be time for former students to unwind and even dance.

Don Martin, who graduated in 1970, said there have been four of these community reunions held since 2015.

The Throw Back Canteens are attended by former teachers and students. Most that attend are from the 1962 to 1980 era, he said.

The events have had a great reception and Martin is encouraging the younger crowd to also join in this last hurrah for FDR.

The money raised goes to the music and theater programs. They are a not-for-profit group.

He first approached the Principal Kevin Boles initially about this idea and got the green light.

Martin said the visit is sure to bring back those memories from woodshop and home economics classrooms that remain virtually unchanged.

A significant bragging right that FDR does hold close to their hearts is a visit from former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt in 1958.ย

As the Bristol Township School District opens the newly-renovated Benjamin Franklin Middle School in January, FDR is slated to close its doors for good in December. The building is most likely headed for demolition.
