The Bristol Township School Board confirmed Friday that is expects to name Michael Nitti as its next superintendent.

The school board is set to vote on Nitti’s hiring as the next superintendent at a special meeting on Thursday, July 21 at 6 p.m. at the district administration building on Blue Lake Road in Levittown.
Bucks County Intermediate Unit Executive Director Dr. Mark Hoffman will host a community forum with Nitti on Thursday, July 21 at 7 p.m.

Nitti will replace Superintendent Dr. Melanie Gehrens, who is retiring after 14 years at the district, including seven as the district’s leader.

I look forward to growing and expanding upon the rich heritage of the school district, while getting to work with the students, staff, and community. I will share my entry plan with the school community in the coming weeks and look forward to getting to know everyone and working together to promote student achievement in support of our vision of ‘Every Student, Every Day,” Nitti said. in a statement.

Nitti has served as superintendent of Ewing Township (New Jersey) Public Schools since 2009. He previously worked in that district as assistant superintendent from 2005 to 2009. His contract with that district was set to expire at the end of the upcoming school year.
The statement from the school board said Nitti has “extensive expertise in all aspects of school operations.”
“As a long-standing Superintendent, Mr. Nitti’s brings to the Bristol Township School District a wealth of experience, knowledge, and leadership skills accompanied by a fresh perspective and new ideas from which our district can continue to grow and flourish. The board is delighted to bring forward a candidate of Mr. Nitti’s unparalleled commitment to students, staff, and community,” School Board President James Morgan said.

The Bucks County Intermediate Unit hosted national search for candidates to lead the district.
Officials from the intermediate unit said 21 candidates applied for the job. A total of 10 finalist were picked, interviewed, and five finalist went through a second round of interviews. A third and final round for the final two candidates was held.

Following the interviews, Nitti was chosen as the top candidate.
The intermediate unit said they used the responses from 311 surveys filled out by parents, students, staff, and community members who offered feedback on what they wanted in a district leader and the district’s path in the future.

Morgan last week celebrated Gehrens’ time in the district, and the board presented her with flowers.
“This woman has worked tireless throughout her career for Bristol Township and the children and families that go here,” Morgan said.

“I’m going to miss her,” he added.
When Gehrens announced her planned retirement in February, she said her time at the district had been a “wonderful journey together.”
Gehrens came to Bristol Township in the mid-2000s after working for the Morrisville School District. She had worked as the supervisor of secondary curriculum and instruction in Bristol Township since 2008.

Gehrens was hired as superintendent in late 2015 to fill the post left vacant when Superintendent Dr. Sam Lee was hired to lead the Bensalem Township School District.
