In a note to parents, the school district announced training will take place this Wednesday and Wednesday, July 20 in several schools and on buses and vans.

The training will be used by the Bucks County South Emergency Response Team, which is made up of several Lower Bucks County police departments. The unit is called up in situations that need a tactical response.

The district advised the training will take place during the day and evening.

“This is a tactical exercise for the police in the event of a true emergency. No students or staff will be present; however, you may see a number of emergency vehicles and staff around some schools,” the district statement said.

“We are fortunate to have strong relationships with the local police and emergency services that support our schools. This training exercise is an example of their commitment to ensuring that students and staff are safe,” the district said.

In the event of an act of violence at a local school, a tactical team would be called to secure the scene or even potentially either arrest or neutralize a suspect.

Over the years, Bucks County’s tactical teams have trained in school buildings for the worst case.

The way police officers and tactical teams respond to violence at schools has changed in the years since the Columbine High School mass killing in spring 1999, and police agencies often revise and train on how to respond.
