Bristol Borough is considering the sale of the town’s sewer system.

In a surprise announcement, Bristol Borough officials said they are considering the sale of the municipal-owned sewer system to the Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority for $50 million.
Council and the Bristol Borough Sewer Authority will meet Monday at 7 p.m. for a special meeting on the topic.
The Bristol Borough Sewer Authority runs sewer service in the borough and operates a treatment plant near Maple Beach. The plant was upgraded over the past 15 years.

The Bucks County Water and Sewer Authority services many municipalities in Bucks County and a handful in Montgomery and Chester counties. They provide service to more than 100,000 households.
Sales of municipal systems have in other areas led to increases in customer bills, but the impacts on Bristol Borough customers is not specifically known as of Sunday.

The borough sold its water system and treatment plant along the Delaware River on Radcliffe street to Aqua Pennsylvania in the mid-1990s. The privately-owned system provides water service for the borough and some surrounding areas in Bristol Township.
Late last year, the council approved a name change from Bristol Borough Water and Sewer Authority and Bristol Borough Sewer Authority. Officials cited the confusion caused because the borough has not owned the water system since the 1990s.
