In a letter to the public Sunday, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Smith wrote the cyber attack breached district data. There was no evidence an financial or personal data for staff or students was compromised.

The district’s internet security monitoring service was working with the district’s technical team to “investigate the scope of the breach, the extent of the work required to address the problem, and the time frame to return any impacted server to normal.”

Smith said the breach was contained once it was discovered.

Below is Smith’s letter to the community:

Dear Pennsbury Families,

Earlier today, our internet security monitoring service identified a data breach (cyber attack) to our computer system. They immediately worked to mitigate and contain the breach. They are currently working with our IT department to investigate the scope of the breach, the extent of the work required to address the problem, and the time frame to return any impacted server to normal.

At this time, there’s no evidence that any financial or personal (student or staff) data has been compromised; however, the network/internet may not be available tomorrow in any school. This will impact email communication and students on Temporary Remote Learning (they will not be able to participate). We will share temporary contact information should you need to contact a school in the event of an emergency.

We will provide updates as we continue to assess the impact of the data breach.

Thank you for your continued support of the Pennsbury School District.

Sincerely,
Thomas A. Smith, Ed.D.
