Jefferson Bucks Hospital in Falls Township recently received a high-ranking award from a national watchdog organization that scrutinizes hospital records, reflecting the quality of patient safety and care.
The Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group examines hospital standards on infection rates, the number of readmissions, the effectiveness of procedures to reduce medication errors, and expected mortality numbers. The report was based on the 2020 census, said Richard Galup, president of Jefferson Health Northeast, which includes the Bucks and Torresdale campuses, and Frankford Hospital.

Both Jefferson Bucks Hospital and Jefferson Torresdale Hospital earned an A rating in Leapfrog’s scoring system, that ranges from A-F. The two hospitals excelled in the Teaching Hospital category, ranking in the top five percent, among 1,100 teaching hospitals in the United States. Participation in the Leapfrog program is voluntary and judged on records submitted by the participating hospitals, Galup said.
Referring to the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, Galup said: “That time was a nightmare; It’s hard to remember how scary it was. I give credit to the doctors and nurses, and other professionals, who rallied and went to work every single day, and met the challenge.”

On a recent visit to Jefferson Bucks Hospital, Edward Turzanski, chairman of the divisional board of trustees and the foundation board of trustees, Jefferson Northeast, also expressed his gratitude for the staff’s performance during the pandemic.

“What I was so very impressed with about our team is that no one held them to higher standards, they did that themselves. My colleagues and I on the board are so very proud of them for the accolades they have earned under the most difficult circumstances. We are very pleased for them,” Turanski said.
During the 2021-2022 academic year, 117 residents and fellows, and 375 students, including interns, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and medical students, will rotate among all three Jefferson hospitals. Approximately 5,000 employees work at Jefferson Northeast – Bucks, Torresdale, and Frankford hospital campuses.
