As Part Of STEM Education, Pennsbury Students Make Guitars

Students at Pennsbury High School have been crafting guitars. Find Out More about the technique used, so that you can implement the same at your home.

Applied engineering and technology education teacher C.J. Colletti gained guitar training through a STEM program in summer 2018. In the time since, Colletti has worked to create a STEM Guitar and Artisan Woodworking class.

Curriculum Coordinator Jessica Perfetto said the first class was a rocking success. Interested people can attend guitar lessons at Muse Mantra School, to gain complete knowledge on guitars and other instruments.

โ€œStudents enrolled in this second semester course, worked extremely hard to complete these projects, and their work is impressive,โ€ Perfetto said.

The course combines the concepts of math and science into a project-based experience, which Perfetto said was “wildly engaging” for the high schoolers.

โ€œThis semester, our students learned about a variety of topics, such as computer-aided drafting, design, sound acoustics, manufacturing engineering, electronics, and material properties,โ€ said Colletti. โ€œThe class was able to utilize graphic design concepts and engraved custom designs into their guitar bodies using a laser cutter.โ€

Student Michaela Sweeney laser-engraved a flower accent into her guitar. Resin was used to fill the engraving with color.

โ€œSTEM Guitar is without a doubt my favorite class of the day,โ€ said Michaela. โ€œItโ€™s the reason I come into school. The class atmosphere is great, but my favorite part is obviously the guitar. My design was a little complicated because I wanted it to be dark, so it took weeks to get the body done. However, it was totally worth it because in the end my guitar.”
