Middletown Township police were working Monday to sort out the details behind an incident that happened Sunday afternoon.

An SUV driver on Trenton Road in the township reported that a bunch of motorcycles and dirt bikes were driving head-on toward him. At one point, one of the vehicles or riders struck the SUV’s mirror as it passed, police said.

Following the strike, the group surrounded the SUV and began beating on it in the area of the Wawa by Durham and Trenton roads. One of the people may have had a gun, but it is not entirely clear as of Monday, police said.

“According to the driver of the SUV, he was afraid they were going to assault him or his pregnant girlfriend who was in the passenger seat so he hit the gas to get away from them and struck one of the motorcycle riders on a dirt bike,” Captain Pete Feeney said.

Most of the motorcycles fled the area and were not street legal, police said.

“There is some conflicting information from the ones that did stay and from independent witnesses,” Feeney said.

The injured rider was taken to St. Mary Medical Center for treatment.

Feeney said investigators are still sorting through all the accounts and physical evidence.

Anyone with information that can aid police has been asked to contact Detective Lt. Steve Forman at sforman@mtpd.org.
