Bucks County’s COVID-19 infection rate has hit numbers not seen since last summer.

Pennsylvania Department of Health data showed that 222 new COVID-19 cases were reported last week. The number hasn’t been seen since last summer, and it marks an 87 percent decrease over the past month.

The COVID-19 test positivity rate dropped from 3.4 percent to 2.5 percent last week. Health experts consider a rate higher than 5 percent as uncontrolled spread.

“Over the last three days, we saw the fewest cases we’ve seen since the month the pandemic started,” Bucks County Health Department Director Dr. David Damsker said in a statement.  “It’s been a long 16 months and we’re ready to enjoy the summer without any restrictions. Let’s finish off COVID as much as we can; please get vaccinated, if you haven’t.”

Two Bucks Countians died of COVID-19 last week, bringing the total of May to 34, a low not seen since last October, according to state data.

At end of last week, there were about 20 people with COVID-19 in local hospitals and two were on ventilators, data showed. The number marks a major increase over recent weeks.

Since the pandemic began, Bucks County has seen 60,593 COVID-19 cases and 1,301 death.
