Middletown Township taxpayers are getting paid back after a developer failed to complete a housing development.
The Middletown Township Board of Supervisors agreed during their Monday evening meeting to accept a $163,317 settlement with insurer Sompo International, which covered the bond for the developer.

Township Solicitor James Esposito said the payment covers the money the municipality spent to finish paving the road, landscaping, concrete work, and stormwater improvements for the Durham Ridge development off Durham Road.
The 30-lot development by AmeriCorp Homes was approved by the township in 2007 and homes were built over the following years.
The developer “ran into some issues” and some work was not complete, forcing the township to get involved, Esposito said.

The performance bond company and township had some disagreement over what needed to be completed, Esposito said.
Supervisors Tom Tosti and Amy Strouse said they heard from neighbors about the problems.

“We have been battling this insurance company and bond issue since we’ve been on the board,” Tosti said, adding he appreciated Esposito’s work on the settlement.
