Middletown Township will have a new place to hold stray dogs.
At their meeting Monday evening, the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors approved the purchase of an on-site kennel for the police department from The Barn Raiser LLC for $15,500.

Joseph Bartorilla, the township’s police chief, said the kennel will come already assembled and provide several separate cages for stray dogs. The department had 36 stray dogs that could have used the kennel in 2018, 52 in 2019, and 40 in 2020.

Bartorilla said dogs are often runaways that are claimed by their owners within one or two days.
One problem for police is that calls for stray dogs often come at odd hours when the SPCA shelter in Central Bucks County is closed. In that case, the department sometimes has to call in the animal control officer to watch the dog, Bartorilla said.

The kennels will also be readied to house so-called “dangerous dogs” that are involved in court disputes until the case is adjudicated, Bartorilla said.
The township previously had a stray dog kennel at its old police station on Veterans Highway but that structure is debilitated, the chief explained.
Also at the meeting, the supervisors approved the purchase of a utility truck for $87,766 from Chapman Ford in Montgomery County, a pickup truck for $45,708 from Chapman Ford in Montgomery County, and a landscape trailer for H. A. DeHart and Son in the amount of $12,680. The trucks are for the public works department.
