Twin Oaks Park Lighting To Get Overhaul

Twin Oaks Park along Trenton and Woodbourne roads in Middletown Township is getting an upgrade.

Aside from upcoming paving and drainage improvements, the Middletown Township Board of Supervisors approved a contract to buy and install a new LED field lighting system for the largest baseball and soccer fields at the park.

Armour and Sons Electric Inc. will complete the work for $463,725.

Township Parks and Recreation Director Paul Kopera said the new system will cut down on energy costs, be able to be operated remotely, reduce light pollution for neighbors, allow for an automatic schedule to be set, and add lighting on the Babe Ruth League baseball field.

“This is going to be a huge improvement for the community,” he said.

The current lighting equipment is from the 1990s and starting to face problems, including some orange-tinted high-pressure sodium lamps that don’t work, Kopera said.

The new LED lights are more focused on the fields and won’t bleed into the yards of neighboring homes, the parks and recreation director said.

Kopera said the new system to run the lights is the same being used at other township parks.

The township has an eye to more lighting upgrades down the road at the 18-acre park that includes a number of baseball softball,and soccer fields.

Supervisors Chairperson Tom Tosti said his son has played on the Middletown Athletic Association fields at Twin Oaks Park and the lighting upgrade is much needed.

A park neighbor spoke and commended the township on the upgrade.

Installation of the new lights should take place in July, Kopera said.

In other news, the supervisors rejected all bids – ranging from $67,000 to $100,000 – for the barn and gutter replacement project at Middletown Township Community Park because none of the bidders met the township’s responsible contractor ordinance. The project will go out to bid again.
