The Bristol Township School District’s new special education and pupil services director is very familiar with the school system.
Al Oberman, who was hired by the school board in January and starts his job next week, served as supervisor of special education in the district from 2016 to 2019. He left at that time to take a job as the supervisor of special education at the Upper Dublin School District in Montgomery County.

In information put out by the district, Oberman said he is looking forward to returning to the Bristol Township.
“Bristol Township has an extremely strong professional staff dedicated to student success,” said Oberman. “It felt more like a family here than anywhere else I’ve worked. I’m happy to come back to be a part of Bristol Township on a larger scale.”
Oberman has worked in special education for his entire 21-year career. He taught elementary, middle and high school students for 15 years.

“I’ve always had the belief that all students should have the opportunity to learn and the opportunity for success post-school. I am a big proponent of equity for all students,” he said.
Oberman is replacing Lou deFonteny, who is an alumnus and longtime employee of the district. He left the district last month to start a new role in the Palisades School District in the upper end of Bucks County.

deFonteny went to Lafayette Elementary School, Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School, and graduated from Harry S. Truman High School before returning to work once he graduated college.
“To be able to come back and work with these people again, it was remarkable,” deFonteny said in December when he was celebrating 27 years as an employee and his farewell.
“During my time at Bristol Township, the students, parents and staff that I’ve had the opportunity to work with will be sorely missed,” deFonteny said. “It truly is a great group of people and I will miss being a part of this community.”

The district said they will miss deFonteny and welcome Oberman back.
“We were very impressed by Al’s dedication and commitment to our students when he worked in BTSD before and are looking forward to collaborating with him in his new role as director,” said Superintendent Dr. Melanie Gehrens.
