The plan for a 56-unit senior living apartment complex has been changed after Bristol Township Council raised worry about a lack of parking spaces.

At the Norton Avenue First Baptist Church property on Norton Avenue between Elwood and Watson avenues, Ingerman Senior Housing Communities has proposed constructing a 56-unit, four-story building behind and on the side of the existing church, which is supportive of the development. Residents would have to be age 62 or older.

The proposal was first presented to Bristol Township Council at their December meeting. Some council members had concerns about a lack of parking spaces.

Greg Elko, an engineer for the project from Langan Engineering, told Bristol Township Council last week that updated plan for Lighthouse on Norton Avenue, which still needs to go through the land development process, went from a proposed 36 parking spots to 67 spaces.

Two of the ways are by adding some parking spaces to the site and moving a daycare from the site to a nearby location that is still being determined, Elko told council members.

“We are able to increase the availability of spaces. It would remove any demand from the daycare facility,” Elko said.

Most residents at the facility are not expected to have vehicles.

The developer came before council last Thursday to give the government body an update on their plans and intends to go before the Bristol Township Zoning Hearing Board next month.

Plans call for 53 one-bedroom units and three two-bedroom units. Nine units would be market-rate units and 47 would be affordable housing units. The Lighthouse on Norton Avenue building would have a community room, arts and crafts area, fitness room, medical suite, a rooftop deck, resident services office, and maintenance office. A medical suite could also be added.

The Norton Avenue First Baptist Church congregation worked with the developer to bring the proposal to the neighborhood.

Norton Avenue First Baptist Church, which has been in operation for 62 years, offers programs for youth, parents, residents of all ages, and includes nonprofit No Longer Bound Prevention and Training Services on site. It also has a food bank that serves 25,000 meals per year.

The project will be partly funded through government financing programs for affordable housing.
