The holiday season is always hectic and busy. However, 2020 has added new dimensions to the holiday craziness. And there’s no sign it easing up in the coming weeks.

As with past years and maybe more so this year, the United Way of Bucks County’s Holiday Gift Card Drive looks past the hussle and bussle of the season with an eye toward helping. For me, the Holiday Gift Card Drive lets me step back and snap out of the day-to-day rush. The program that helps older kids and teens throughout Bucks County puts focus on kindness, caring for others, and giving with the intention of helping someone who might be down on their luck.
The great thing about this program is how simple it is. Tweens and teens whose families are not able to gift them anything this year are provided gift cards for stores and eateries they would go to, often with their friends. If they’re out with their friends, they can get a treat or buy a pair of jeans. The top-notch team at the United Way of Bucks County have worked so hard over the past few years to make sure donations are put toward getting the best value on gift cards, like using donations to buy gift cards in bulk at a discounted rate.
This year, COVID-19 and the connected financial impacts have hit our nation and our communities hard. From reporting, talking to friends in the nonprofit world, speaking with readers seeking help, and volunteering with our local charities, that has become so clear to me. Many families requesting help this year have never asked for assistance in the past.

A surprise, even as simple as a gift card, will deliver a bit of cheer in this trying year.
