Although Bucks County reported a week-over-week decline in new COVID-19 cases, health officials asked residents to step up precautions at home as household spread was blamed for close to half of the new infections last week.

Between Sunday, September 27 and Saturday, October 3, the county health department reported 228 new cases, averaging about 33 cases per day. In the previous week, the county received word of 241 confirmed cases.

Among the new cases last week, as many as 45 percent of infections were traced to household contact, which is people who live in the same residence and spread the virus among one another. The number marks the highest percentage of household spread since the pandemic began in the county in March.

“We are seeing more and more of our cases coming directly from friends and family members, especially at parties and social gatherings,” Bucks County Health Department Director Dr. David Damsker said in a statement. “Community spread is going down, which means if we can tighten up our actions when we’re around the people we know, we can really drop the number in Bucks County.”

Looking at last week’s 228 cases, 103 were spread through household contacts, 32 from community spread, 14 blamed on out-of-state travel, 12 caught the virus from non-health care workplaces, 11 were residents or workers at long-term care facilities, eight were health care workers, and the remainder were not immediately able to complete contact tracing.

As LevittownNow.com previously reported, five COVID-19 patients, including a 27-year-old with “severe” underlying health conditions, died last week.

As of Monday, 12 Bucks Countians were in area hospitals with COVID-19. None of the dozen patients were on ventilators.
