A local sailor took part in a Women’s Equality Day celebration on the high seas.
Interior Communications Electrician 2nd Class Shamirah Ballard, of Bristol Township, opened the ceremony that was held last week aboard amphibious dock landing ship USS Germantown, which is deployed to the Philippine Sea as part of the America Expeditionary Strike Group, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit team, according to the U.S. Navy.

The ceremony, which involved Ballard and fellow shipmates, took place under yellow lighting, a symbol of the women’s equality movement.
Women’s Equality Day marked the 100th anniversary of the adoption of the 19th Amendment, which allowed women the right to vote.
