On Busy Night, Responders Rescue Older Man Who Fell In Ravine

Fire crews were busy Thursday with calls around Middletown Township and Langhorne Borough.

Frank Farry, the chief of the Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company and a state representative, said his crews and Newtown Fire and Emergency Services were called to St. Mary Medical Center for a burst pipe in the parking area that was dispelling a large amount of water around 8:40 p.m.

The burst pipe was handled in about 20 minutes, Farry said.

Around 8:50 p.m., the Langhorne-Middletown Fire Company and Newtown Fire and Emergency Services were called to the The Villas at Shady Brook 55-plus community near Township Line Road for a carbon monoxide response.

Firefighters arrived and found a dislodged ventilation pipe had caused very high carbon monoxide levels in several connected residences. No injuries were reported, Farry said.

At 9:02 p.m., according to Farry, firefighters were called to the portion of Middletown Country Club that sits in Langhorne Borough for a rescue. An older man who was out on a walk went missing, ended up on the golf course, and fell down a 12-foot ravine that was surrounded by heavy brush.

Farry said firefighters, area police, and the Penndel-Middletown Emergency Squad undertook an effort to rescue the man, who had ended up in a creek.

Using a line of firefighters, the man was secured in a stokes basket and handed out of the ravine to a fire company pickup truck on the golf course, which transported the older man to a waiting ambulance.

The man was taken to St. Mary Medical Center to be treated.

Farry said kids fishing at the pond at the Middletown Township-owned country club alerted authorities after hearing a faint yelling through the late evening air.

“It’s a good thing those kids found him,” the chief said.
