Citing sources, CBS 3 reported Monday evening that an arm found earlier in the day in the 8800 block of Pine Road in Philadelphia was connected to the fatal struck pedestrian crash in Middletown. The reporting was matched by 6abc.

The body part was discovered about 9 miles from the Route 1 crash site.

Middletown police declined to confirm the reports.

Route 1 in both directions reopened around noon. The closure lasted more than 8 hours.

Middletown police said a 29-year-old woman was killed after being struck by several vehicles along Route 1 early Monday morning.

“Preliminary investigation indicates a 29-year-old female was struck and killed while either walking along Route 1 or attempting to cross the highway when she was struck. The pedestrian was struck numerous times by other southbound traveling vehicles, but none of the striking vehicles remained on scene,” police said. 

The woman was struck along Route 1 in the area of Neshaminy High School around 3:30 a.m.

Hours after the death, police investigators appeared to be focusing their attention on the southbound lanes between the high school access road entrance and the Neshaminy Creek.

Authorities were holding back the identity woman who was killed until her family can be notified. 

The highway remained closed in both directions between the Penndel exit in Bensalem and the access road in Langhorne Manor from early morning through 11:30 a.m.

During the morning rush hour, traffic was backed up through area roads as fire police and PennDOT pushed traffic off Route 1 at the closure points.

The Neshaminy School District said a number of buses arriving to Maple Point, Poquessing and Sandburg middle schools were delayed due to the highway closure. At least 16 buses heading to Neshaminy High School were also delayed.

Police are asking anyone regarding the crash to Officer Timothy King or Sgt. Michael Lubold at 215-750-3800.

Both directions of Route 1 were closed through a large portion of the area due to a crash.

The highway was blocked by PennDOT sign trucks and fire police between the Lincoln Highway exit in Bensalem near the Middletown border in the northbound lanes and the South Bellevue Avenue access road exit in Langhorne Manor Borough was the point of exit for southbound drivers. The detoured traffic was causing trouble on local roads in the area as of 6:50 a.m. Monday.

Middletown police Chief Joseph Bartorilla said the closure was due to the investigation of a fatal crash involving a pedestrian who was struck. The person was pronounced dead at the scene along Route 1.

The closure began shortly after 3:30 a.m.

Further details on the crash were expected later.
