A man had to be rescued from a drainage pipe in Bristol Borough with the help of firefighters on Monday evening.

Firefighters, police, and medics were dispatched to the rear of Gaudenzia Lower Bucks, a substance abuse treatment center tucked behind Lower Bucks Hospital, around 5:50 p.m. for the call. Crews arrived and found a middle-aged Bristol Township man who was curled up in the outfall of the storm water drainage system pipe, Bristol Borough Fire Chief Herb Slack said.

Fire crews checked the pipe for gas levels and determined it was safe before they assisted in removing the man from the pipe, Slack said.

Chief of Police Steve Henry said the man appeared to have been suffering a medical emergency.

The Bucks County Rescue Squad transported the man the short distance to Lower Bucks Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, officials said.

It was not clear how the man accessed the pipe.

Slack said firefighters had to cut the fence that separates the Gaudenzia facility from the nearby lake off Commerce Circle to gain access to the man.
