PennDOT officials announced that work to rehabilitate the Big Oak Road bridge over I-295 in Middletown will begin on Thursday, September 19.
The pothole-marked bridge is expected to be closed through late October as Road-Con Inc. of West Chester in Chester County adds a concrete overlay to the bridge deck, repairs substructure repairs, installs debris protection, mills and paves the roadway, and reseals bridge deck joints.

Big Oak Road will be closed between Harpers Crossing and Hickory Lane.
“During the bridge closure, Big Oak Road motorists will be directed to use Oxford Valley Road, Heacock Road, Stony Hill Road, Langhorne Yardley Road, and Township Line Road. Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone,” PennDOT officials said.
The precast concrete bridge that crosses the highway was built in 1967 and carries 8,100 vehicles per day. It was recently listed as being in “poor” condition.

A number of other bridges in Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties will be repaired under the $4.4 million contract with Road-Con. All the bridges should have rehabilitation work completed by late 2020, PennDOT officials said.
