The Philadelphia Police Department’s bomb squad was called to the area Friday afternoon.

Langhorne Borough police Chief John Godzieba said the unit was called after a man clearing out his grandfather’s home in the area of East Watson and North Bellevue avenues found what appeared to be a mortar round, large caliber shells, a grenade, and machine gun ammunition.

Some of the items were inert and it was unclear if the others were live, Godzieba said.

The city bomb squad responded to the scene and took the items to be examined by an x-ray.

As of Saturday morning, it was unclear if any of the items were found to be live.

“As a lot of the World War II generation passes away, it’s not uncommon to find grenades and other war souvenirs they brought back,” the chief said.
