The Middletown Township Police Department has begun replacing its TASER units to the tune of $18,440.70.

The current TASERs being used by the police department have been discontinued by its manufacturer, which no longer allows the department to have broken tasers repaired. The current TASERs have been in operation for the last 10 years, police officials said.
Officials noted this is year one of the TASER replacement program, and the township plans to purchase 15 TASER X26P units and related equipment each year for the next several years until all TASERs used by officers have been replaced.
TASERs, made by Arizona-based Axon, fires two small barbs that puncture skin and discharge an electrical current that are intended to disable a suspect. The weapon is used by police as a less-than-lethal force option.

According to officials, the upgrade of TASERs, holsters, and related equipment was discussed during the budget planning meetings last year.
