A social media post caused a scare at an area middle school on Monday morning.

According to officials, a Snapchat post referenced a shooting at Maple Point Middle School in Middletown was reported by a parent in the morning. The threat led to police and the Neshaminy School District launching an investigation that found the reported threat to be unfounded.

“There is no indication of any credible threat,” Middletown police Captain Pete Feeney told LevittownNow.com.

District spokesperson Chris Stanley echoed Feeney’s comment and said there was a similar unfounded threat at Poquessing Middle School in Lower Southampton.

“MTPD sent officers to Maple Point as a precautionary measure as we investigated the rumor.  After speaking with the students involved and working with administration, it was determined that the students had a social media conversation with each other and embellished the nature of the story to include the supposed threat to Maple Point,” Maple Point Principal Andy Sokol wrote in a letter to parents.

Police were present at the school as students arrived Monday morning.

“The safety of our students is our number one concern at Maple Point. We take every report of threats seriously and work closely with local police departments to investigate these reports. We would like to remind parents and guardians to speak with your children about the seriousness of online messaging and the consequences of inappropriate or threatening messages, even if made as a joke or repeated from other sources. Though the messages might start outside of our school buildings, they can quickly disrupt school activities,” Sokol told parents.
