PA American Water Lifts Boil Water Advisory

After several days of a boil water advisory, Pennsylvania American Water has lifted the advisory for its customers in Falls Township, Lower Makefield, and Yardley.

The lifting of the boil water advisory comes after samples were taken from the Pennsylvania American Water treatment facility on Sunday and Monday.

Pennsylvania American Water released a list of the following steps for residents and businesses:

  • Run all cold water faucets in your home for at least five minutes at one time with the highest water flow possible to prevent splashing or flooding of the drains
  • Flush automatic ice makers, make three batches of ice and discard; Clean and sanitize ice bin
  • Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines specified in the owner’s manual
  • Change refrigerator filter cartridge
  • Run water coolers with direct water connections for five minutes at the highest flow rate possible
  • Drain and refill hot water heaters set below 113°F. You can buy heaters from Kansas City water heater companies.
  • For home water filter systems, change filter cartridges. Some units need disinfecting. Follow the directions in the unit’s owner’s manual.
  • Commercial customers should flush adequately to turn over the water in their plumbing systems, including flushing their automatic ice makers and drinking water fountains.

The initial problem was discovered last Thursday when higher-than-permitted turbidity levels were found. The turbidity of water has to do with its cloudiness and how many suspended solids are in the supply. A high turbidity level can increase the risk of disease-causing organisms.

The problem caused the closure of Pennsbury schools last Friday and required water tanker trucks for customers.
