Thursday Goes To The Dogs At State Capitol

Thursday went to the dogs at the Pennsylvania State Capitol in Harrisburg.

A group of animal welfare activist and officials joined a bipartisan contingent of lawmakers to celebrate one year since since Gov. Tom Wolf, a Democrat, signed Libre’s Law, which overhauled Pennsylvania’s previous animal abuse statutes and increased the penalties for those convicted of abusing animals.

Republican State Rep. Frank Farry of Langhorne was a supporter of Libre’s law and advocated to give civil immunity to humane society officers during enforcement of the state’s animal cruelty laws.

Kristen Tullo, Pennsylvania director of Humane Society of the United States, applauded the one year anniversary of the law and said animals across the state will be helped. She called Libre’s Law a “huge win” for animals in Pennsylvania.

The law was named after Libre, a Boston terrier, who was rescued after being found sick and neglected at a Lancaster County farm last year.

The governor walked Libre before the cameras and stood by him as he enjoyed a dog-friendly cake.
